“Everything Gains in Grandeur Every Day”

I absolutely adore this quote by Giacometti, so republish it every few months:

“The more I work, the more I see things differently, that is, everything gains in grandeur every day, becomes more and more unknown, more and more beautiful. The closer I come, the grander it is, the more remote it is.”

I don’t know about which quote most inspiries me, but I am very fond of this one:

“Mercy is not weakness; it is the expression of ultimate strength. We should not be embarrassed by the feelings that force us to stop the daily massacre and suffering of helpless life.”—Jill Smith

It’s not one I would wave around and point to as something universally inspiring. It’s more personal for me in that it speaks to the trembling, inner part of myself that fears being ailienated for speaking up on behalf of animals. It reassures my broken heart when I see animal abuse. It’s easy to be embarrassed or apologetic, even within more generalized activist communities, about my obsession with animal rights – and this quote is one that helps to remind me that the real source of all of that, in it’s purest sense, is strength.
